“Step Up" is a unique acrylic and mixed media on canvas by graffiti artist JonOne (American, b. 1963). Born and raised in Harlem, JonOne grew up as a graffiti artist tagging around New York City. He moved to Paris in 1987 and began working on canvas in a workshop called L’Hopital Ephemere (Hospital Ephemeral) with other graffiti artists such as Sharp, A-One, Ash, and Jayone Skki. This particular canvas was completed between 1993-1995 during his time at L’Hopital Ephemere, and dedicatedto his fellow artist and friend, Sharp.
A busy and highly colorful abstraction, this work comes to represent an optimistic view of the frenzied large cities in which Jon One and his fellow graffiti artist comrades all grew up in, a common theme in the artist’s work. This work measures 23.75 x 31.88 inches.
JonOne (American, b. 1963) first showed his work in a gallery in 1990 at Galerie Glebisch 45 in Berlin. In 2010, a 20 year retrospective of his work was held in at Speerstra Gallery, Bursins, Switzerland. He has had recent solo shows at Kolly Gallery, Zurich; Art Statements Gallery, Hong Kong; New Square Gallery, Lille, France; Boccara Gallery, Moscow; Art Partner Galerie Laurent Rigail & Eric Brugier, Paris; and Galerie Martine Ehmer, Brussels. The artist currently lives and works in Paris.
