About the Artist

CEY

Cey Adams is a visual artist, graphic designer and author.  He was the founding creative director of Def Jam Recordings and is known for his work with Run DMC, Beastie Boys, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and Mary J. Blige. He has been described as "legendary" for his work in hip-hop graphic design, by the Brooklyn Academy of Music and Complex Magazine. Cey started his career as a graffiti artist in the late 70s and early 80s. He studied painting at New York's School of Visual Arts and has exhibited alongside fellow artists Jean-Michel Basquiat and Keith Haring. In 1982 he appeared in the historic PBS documentary Style Wars about subway graffiti in New York. Cey has been commissioned to create installations for the High Museum of Atlanta, The GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles and the Juilliard School in New York. He recently co-authored, "DEFinition: The Art and Design of Hip Hop", published by Harper-Collins and designed Def Jam Recordings: The First 25 Years of the Last Great Record Label with Rizzoli.
