Inspired by the dynamism of his native New York City, Greg Lamarche's collages combine the city's relentless rhythm and graffiti's aggressive presence to express the power, elegance and rebelliousness of urban creativity. Using found materials and commercially printed papers from his vast collection of vintage printed matter, Lamarche abstracts graffiti's visual language, playing with a profusion of font styles, word fragments, multiple layers, bold colors, rhythmic repetition, multiple perspective and movement. Each unique work of precisely hand-cut paper thus becomes an interplay of the directness of graphic design and the aesthetics of fine art.
Born and raised in Queens, NY, Greg Lamarche started making collages and writing graffiti in the early 1980s.From 1992-95 he published the seminal graffiti magazine Skills while living outside of Boston. Since 1999 he has been working as a fine artist, graphic designer and iillustrator.His collages are exhibited in galleries around the world and he has created many site specific murals in cities all over the globe including, Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Venice, Montreal and London among others. His artwork has been featured in numerous publications and books including Juxtapoz Magazine, Print Magazine, the New York Times, The History of American Graffiti, The ABCs of Style and World Piecebook to name a few. Design projects include collaborations with WeWork, IBM, Converse, Facebook, J Crew, Shake Shack, Bloomingdales and Nike. In 2019 Greg had his most comprehensive show to date, All Good Things in the Trustman Gallery at Simmons University, Boston. The show was a survey of over 20 years of collage work and other mediums. The exhibition catalog was published with an essay by art critic and curator Paul Laster. Recent exhibitions include, Track Work, 100 Years of the New York City Subway, at ACA Galleries and the inaugural show at the Museum of Graffiti in Miami.
